Building porch railing

Now that all the post newels for our porch are  finished. Its time to build the railing. My son Matt took apart a deck or something from one of his remodel jobs. He has a bunch of seasoned 2*6 lumber just waiting for a new home. In my eyes this wood is perfect. It has already moved or warped from it’s previous life and is now stable. Even better yet its free!! Thank Matt!

I start out with  a 2*6  about 60″ long.

cut it to 4.5″ and 1.25″ thick. Put a decorative round over on the outside and a 3″ dado that is 3/8″ deep to hold the posts. That is all there is to it.

cut 1″ strips that are 5/8″ thick to go on the bottom and top to help keep the posts in place.

NOTE: finished painted with strips. My wife primed these with kilz, then paints and seals all parts before they are assembled.

Hopefully assembly and install can take place this weekend.
